FISHING FOR KIDS
"I always thought this type of scene could only be found in British Columbia, Alaska, Oregon and other famed salmon destinations,"
Aurora resident David Thomas wrote of an October experience in, of all places, the Milwaukee River, smack in the city limits.
Thomas
told of "hundreds of fish fighting for spawning rights, jostling for position and launching themselves up waterfalls" in the annual
run out of Lake Michigan that titillates anglers in dozens of rivers in a three-state area.
Thomas traveled to a family wedding in
Milwaukee, where he learned of the king salmon run, broke out his fly rod and headed for the river with his 7-year-old son, Grey.
Thomas caught six kings of up to 30 pounds using Woolly Boogers and egg patterns.
"I'm completely blown away that we could have a
quality fishing experience like this in the home of Pabst Blue Ribbon and 'Laverne and Shirley."'

Perfect Time To Take A Child Fishing
Published: Dec 26, 2005
On The Waterfront is a daily look at the area fishing scene through the eyes of local charter boat captains and fishing guides. Today: Mark Cook
With most kids out of school for another week, now is a perfect time to take your child fishing. Load up the truck with a rod and reel, a can of wiggler worms and a cooler of sodas.
I grew up fishing eastern Hillsborough County, particularly the Alafia River and Hurrah Creek. Some of my fondest childhood memories
were waiting for my dad to get home from work before loading up our canoe and heading to the river. Sometimes we would just bank fish,
but many times we would put our canoe in at the Hurrah Creek on Thatcher Road off State Road 39 in the Picnic community. The small
dark water stream is part of the north prong of the Alafia and flows north, where it meets the south prong at Alderman's Ford. We
would paddle south for a while and drift back tossing worms or crickets and watch our bobbers dive to the bottom with a bluegill or
shellcracker on the other end. Occasionally we would get lucky and catch a small yearling bass or a catfish. This particular stretch
of river is home to some monster mudfish and on more than one occasion we would hook into one that would pull our canoe all over until
it broke the line or we reeled it in. On another trip I flung my Zebco 33 back over my head and hooked my dad's glasses and before
he could even yell I cast them 30 yards into the middle of the river.
This holiday season make some memories by taking someone fishing, and if you are fishing the Hurrah Creek area and hook a pair of glasses give me a call. It's been 25 years but my Dad still hasn't forgiven me.
Probably the most important goal we have at Fishin' Secrets is to help kids learn to appreciate fishing and the outdoors in general. To that end, if you or your organization would like our assistance in getting kids involved, please let us know. We'd love to help. If you have any information that you think could help others teach young people about our wonderous world, and its living things, please submit it and we'll get it added to the site. Thanks, in advance, for your support of this most vital issue.
