My Favorite Wiper Tactics

Mark Coleman/Cutthroat

We're nowhere near the height of the open water season, but I thought I would summarize what I know about wiper fishing.

Bait fishing:
Slip or egg-sinker rig, with 1-3' leader, baited with cut baits like carp, or shrimp, or live baits like crawlers or minnows.
Worm harnesses bounced on the bottom, or pulled behind bottom bouncers from a boat also work on the bottom. Certain soft plastic jerkbaits are also said to work, although I haven't tried them.

Bobber fishing:
At the right time of year (Spring, early Summer, and Fall), a 3" live shiner or sunfish suspended 4' below a large bobber can produce nice fish in areas where wipers come in to feed around dusk (along dams or riprap, or on sandy bottom flats.

Poppers:
Long-bodied poppers, like the
Rapala Skitter Pop and similar poppers can produce well in the early morning and around dusk, especially when shad are schooling high in the water column.

Crankbaits:
Trolling a
Rat-L Trap 1/4 oz. can be deadly during the spring and well into summer, and during the fall. It also works to cast them into schools of shad when you run into wipers pounding them at the surface. Other crankbaits produce wipers, too, such as the rattlin' rapala and classic floating or suspending rapalas in fairly short lengths that have a more vigorous action than longer rapalas. I haven't tried jointed rapalas, but I suspect they will work well also.
Experiment with colors and patterns, but I find that silver and blue Rat-L Traps work as well as any crankbait.

Streamers - Fly fishing:
Wipers are always hit or miss, so some people don't like to expend the energy required to cast heavy streamers with heavy rods. Those that do are often rewarded by hungry wipers. I fish
Lefty's Deceivers and Clouser Minnows tied on stainless steel hooks in sizes 2, 4, and 6. I like chartreuse and white, pink and white, blue and white, black and white, and brown and white. I keep switching until I find the right colors. You can use #1, 2 or 3 fly leaders, if you want, but it's more economical to just use 12 lb. test mono (about 7-10 ft.) because you don't need a tapered leader when you're throwing heavy streamers. I have used floating, neutral, or sinking lines with success.

Wipers are hit and miss in most places, but whey they are on, you won't find a fish with more game. They produce nice fillets, too.

Carpin' with Rob from the British Isles
Firstly, gather your components. I use a braid of 15lb to match the breaking strain of my mainline, unless I am fishing a snaggy enviroment, then I up it to 20-25lb for the abrasive properties. A size 10 eyed hook and a size 8 barrel swivel. I also choose a colour of braid that matches the bottom of the lake I'm fishing(black at the mo to match the silt in my lake). Then you cut off a length of braid about 4" longer than you want your rig...in my case about 8" for a 4" rig. You take one end and form an overhand loop...forgive me if you know any of this...by doubling the end over, then take it round over the top of it self, under and up through the loop and pull tight.

Then push the tag end through the eye of the hook on the opposite side to the point.  Next, using a gate ended splicing needle, push through the bait to be used and thread it onto the looped end. This helps to set the desired length of hair. Then secure bait on the hair by putting a bait stop, or a twig or bit of grass if you can't get these, through the loop and pulling the bait up tight to it.  Hold the hook between thumb and finger, point down and whip around the shank going over towards yourself and under away from yourself.

This is a full turn and you need 6 full turns minimum.  If you held the hook as described and look at it from the eyed end you are going counter clockwise around the shank. Then with the last turn coming off the opposite side of the shank to the point, go back through the eye on this side, so the tag end comes out on the point side. This is essential to the hook flipping point down in the mouth, to achieve the best hook hold in the bottom lip. Next tighten it up using a nail through the hair loop, and pulling on the tag end, don't use the hook to tighten it until you have done this as the hair will twist. Hey presto, one knotless knot. Now you just need to attach the other end to the barrel swivel and you're away. The bait on the hair is mainline's pineapple juice pop-up(bouyant)boilie, which you would need to put shot on the rig for but I use this rig for non pop-up boilies too. Also, other baits can be mounted on the hair such as sweetcorn.  Pull it across your hand and watch the hook flip around and imagine digging in on the edge of the "carps lip".

NOW THAT'S A CARP RIG!!!
